Airline Credit Cards Are Not Only About the Miles

Miles has always been the primary reason to get an airline credit card. There is usually an enticing sign up bonus that could get you a free domestic award ticket. Additional miles are earned through every purchase with ticket purchases being double or triple miles. Many other benefits are also included and should not be overlooked, because they can be just as valuable as the miles.

First checked bag free

When airlines began to charge around $25 for a checked bag it became much more expensive to fly, particularly for family vacations where several bags are often required. Many airlines are now offering the first checked bag free if you charge the ticket purchase on your credit card. That is a savings of $50 round trip and everyone on the same reservation receives this benefit, so a family of four can save $200.

Companion Ticket

Upon the annual credit card renewal a companion ticket may be included each year. This ticket allows the companion to fly for free, but there is a catch. You must pay full price for the first ticket, so the savings are not 50% and in some instances the price can end up being almost identical.

Partner Airlines

Miles are worthless if you are unable to redeem for a free flight before they expire. Redemption at partner airlines will increase your options and as a result the risk of not being able to use your miles are much lower. The use is also being expanded to other items not related to a flight. Free nights at hotels and car rentals are available as well as magazine subscriptions, which is a great way to keep an account in active status.

You still have to go beyond the rewards program and look at the general terms. Interest rates are often higher than a regular card, but only an issue if you carry a balance.
