Before making summer vacation reservations, you’ll have to select a summer vacation destination. With out a destination at heart, it’s impossible to make reservations. When selecting a summer vacation destination, it is crucial that you consider a variety of factors. These factors should include whether you are traveling with children, the age of your children, and the price of travel. Keeping these factors in mind will enable you to pick the summer vacation destination that will best fit your needs.

Once you have selected a summer vacation destination, you may begin to make reservations. Many amusement parks, campgrounds, and hotels in the United States don’t require reservations. Although reservations may not be required, it is still advised that you make them. Well-liked summer vacation “hotspots,” quickly fill up with vacationing tourists. Without appropriate reservations, you might be left without the necessary accommodations.

When it’s time to book a summer vacation, a large number of travelers use aid from a travel agent. Travel agents are individuals who focus on researching and arranging vacations for their clients. Travel agents are popular because they allow clients to spend more time completing their daily activities, as opposed to having to research and plan a summer vacation.

If given the chance most families would like to use the services of a travel agent. Unfortunately, services of a travel agent tend not to come free. If you have an interest in planning a summer vacation, on a budget, you may want to think about making your own reservations. In a few simple minutes, you can actually easily make reservations online or over the phone. Not only should your reservations include hotel accommodations, but travel accommodations as well.

Apart from car travel, air travel is probably the most preferred methods of travel for arriving at summer vacation destinations. If you are interested in booking your airline reservations online, you must find the online website from the airline you want to fly with. Though booking online can be a bit advanced, you should be able to do this by yourself, just take your time and read everything carefully.

Unless you are camping outdoors, it is likely that you will want to reserve a hotel room. Unless you intend on staying at a smaller resort, you should be able to make online reservations. Most of the well known hotel chains, including Holiday Inn, Hampton Inns, Super 8, and Motel 6, have online websites. Specialty resorts that are located in popular summer vacation destinations, including California or Florida, are likely to also allow online booking.

When it comes to overnight stays, most people would prefer to stay in a hotel, but not everyone. Many families enjoy vacations which are centered on the outdoors. These vacations often involve camping outdoors. Even if you plan on vacationing at a state park or a public campground, you are still urged to make a reservation. Public campgrounds and state parks are sometimes limited on the total amount of camping space they have. Making a reservation will ensure that you’re guaranteed a spot to set up your tent or park your RV trailer.

To book a well-liked vacation destination, but at a discount, you might consider trying to looking the services offered by online travel websites. These websites tend to provide discounts on popular hotels, airlines, and restaurants all around the world. The only real downside to using the services offered by an online discount travel website is that they tend to focus only on popular summer vacation destinations. If you’re looking to vacation at an unknown resort, you could be unable to use the services of a discount travel website.

Whether you choose to use the services of a discount travel website, an expert travel agent, or you intend to make your own vacation reservations, you’re encouraged to look at the appropriate steps. Anticipating room at the hottest summer vacation destinations is really a costly mistake that could possibly ruin your vacation. Don’t make that mistake; book your reservations ahead of time.

Article by Alexia Cameron

After two summers of staycations and thwarted getaway plans, Americans are ready to take to the road and the sky again. As money issues begin to be resolved, a new stumbling block may arise this summer regarding what to do with Grandma or Grandpa. Whether you plan on taking your parent on vacation with you or setting up a support system back home, don’t fret, you can still cherish your getaway.

While you may be filled with feelings of guilt if you choose to leave your loved one at home, it is important for you to re-energize, relax and recharge your battery so you can come back refreshed and ready to resume your caregiver role. These feelings of guilt are normal, and you have to find a balance between caring for yourself and caring for your parent to avoid caregiver burnout.

Set up a system of checks and balances if you are leaving your parent at home. Medical alert systems like LifeFone provide immediate and caring assistance from trained emergency care specialists 24 hours a day. This way your parent can rest at home in your absence.

Hiring a home health aide for the duration of your trip may also decrease your uneasiness about leaving your parent at home. Home health agency costs range from about to an hour depending on location, services and training. However, these costs may be covered short-term by Medicare.

If you plan on taking your elder parent with you on vacation, it is important to obtain medical clearances from a physician to ensure the planned trip is realistic and appropriate for your family member. Physicians can also assist in ordering extra medication that may be needed for the trip and provide access to medical records in case of emergency.

It is also necessary to factor in additional time when traveling with an elderly family member. Airlines often offer priority boarding for special needs passengers and priority check-ins for wheelchairs and mobility devices. When driving, plan for additional stops. You may even want to consider renting a more spacious vehicle for the trip, or one that offers more accessibility. Prior to your actual vacation, try taking your parent on a shorter trip to a local destination to test the waters and see how they do in their new environment before going on an extended stay.

If you take the time to decide which option is best for your parent before buckling the kids in the car and slathering on the sunscreen this vacation season, you will have a much more enjoyable and relaxing vacation regardless of which route you choose.

This year a large number of couples and families intend to take a summer vacation. Summer vacations are popular. In fact, they are so popular that it is likely that you are interested in taking one. When it comes to booking a summer vacation, there are a number of ways that you can make your reservations.

Before making summer vacation reservations, you will have to select a summer vacation destination. Without a destination in mind, it is impossible to make reservations. When selecting a summer vacation destination, it is important that you consider a number of factors. These factors should include whether you are traveling with children, the age of your children, and the cost of travel. Keeping these factors in mind will enable you to select the summer vacation destination that will best fit your needs.

After you have selected a summer vacation destination, you can begin to make reservations. A large number of amusement parks, campgrounds, and hotels in the United States do not require reservations. Despite the fact that reservations may not be required, it is still advised that you make them. Popular summer vacation “hotspots,” quickly fill up with vacationing tourists. Without the proper reservations, you may be left without the necessary accommodations.

When it comes to booking a summer vacation, a large number of travelers use the assistance of a travel agent. Travel agents are individuals who specialize in researching and arranging vacations for their clients. Travel agents are popular because they allow clients to spend more time completing their daily activities, instead of having to research and plan a summer vacation.

If given the opportunity most families would prefer to use the services of a travel agent. Unfortunately, services of a travel agent do not come free. If you are interested in planning a summer vacation, on a budget, you may want to consider making your own reservations. In a few simple minutes, you could easily make reservations online or over the phone. Not only should your reservations include hotel accommodations, but travel accommodations as well.

Aside from car travel, air travel is one of the most preferred methods of travel for arriving at summer vacation destinations. If you are interested in booking your airline reservations online, you need to find the online website of the airline you wish to fly with. Popular airlines include, but are not limited to, Delta, United Airlines, Spirit Airlines, and Northwest Airlines. Each of these airlines has an online website that should allow the online booking of reservations.

Unless you are camping outdoors, it is likely that you will need to reserve a hotel room. Unless you plan on staying at smaller resort, you should be able to make online reservations. Most of the well known hotel chains, including Holiday Inn, Hampton Inns, Super 8, and Motel 6, have online websites. Specialty resorts that are located in popular summer vacation destinations, including California or Florida, are likely to also allow online booking.

When it comes to overnight stays, most individuals would prefer to stay at a hotel, but not everyone. A large number of families enjoy vacations that are centered on the outdoors. These vacations often involve camping outdoors. Even if you plan on vacationing at a state park or a public campground, you are still urged to make a reservation. Public campgrounds and state parks are often limited on the amount of camping space they have. Making a reservation will ensure that you are guaranteed a place to set up your tent or park your RV trailer.

To book a popular vacation destination, but at a discount, you may want to looking the services offered by online travel websites. These websites tend to offer discounts on popular hotels, airlines, and restaurants all around the world. The only downside to using the services offered by an online discount travel website is that they tend to focus only on popular summer vacation destinations. If you are looking to vacation at an unknown resort, you may be unable to use the services of a discount travel website.

Whether you choose to use the services of a discount travel website, a professional travel agent, or you intend you make your own vacation reservations, you are encouraged to take the appropriate steps. Anticipating room at the hottest summer vacation destinations is a costly mistake that could possibly ruin your vacation. Don’t make that mistake; book your reservations ahead of time.

Booking your summer vacation yourself is one good way to pull off a vacation escapade different from the one you had last year. In just a few months it will be summer once again and you’re quite tired with the idea of just spending another summer at the crowded local beach. In fact, the local beach seems to be getting fuller every year because everyone thinks that you have to spend a fortune just to travel.

By booking your summer vacation yourself, you can find ways to look for the cheapest options available. In fact you can plan on it this early, so you can start saving the money you’ll need. On that note, let’s start thinking of different ways of booking your summer vacation yourself.

With all of the available resources in the net, it’s no longer impossible to come up with the cheapest options if you will be booking your summer vacation yourself. What are your options?

Booking your Summer Vacation Yourself: What are your Options for Cheap Travel Destinations?

Consider how much you can come up with in terms of transportation fares. There are a lot of cheap travel destinations you can go to and the first thing that you should do is to look for them in the net. Consider taking advantage of the dollar exchange rates where a US dollar can buy more commodities. Hence when booking your summer vacation yourself, what are your options of cheap travel destinations? They can be based on the location’s proximity for lower fares and those with higher disparity in US dollar exchange rates for better buying power.

You can be anywhere as near as Vancouver, British Columbia where you can find hostels for as low as a night. You can fly across the globe and find the most advantage in Asian countries like Malaysia, Singapore, and Philippines. Closer destinations are in Latin American countries like Brazil, Honduras and Costa Rica which you can reach by taking a cruise ship or by plane. Inexpensive hotel rates are equivalent to to dollars per night or stay in cheap but clean hostels where rates can be as low as low as per night.

Booking your Summer Vacation Yourself: What are your Options for Lower Fares?

Booking your summer vacation early is like buying your plane tickets and making your reservations off season. In fact you will even have better choices of seating and lodging arrangements. You can check out information about cruise ships that reward passengers with discounts if the latter pay their cruise trips 6 months ahead of the scheduled trips. The earlier you can book your travel tickets, the earlier you can have your hotel accommodations booked for reservations as well.

Booking your Summer Vacation Yourself: What are your Options for Flexibility of Schedules

You can check other US airlines that offer lower airfares. Consider traveling by land for at least half an hour to save on cost of airfares by taking your flights at these airports. However, checkout the price differential, if it’s worth the travel-time you’ll be losing.

You can also check if there are other available airports you are not aware of at your travel destination. The Philippines for example has two International airports, one in Manila and another in Cebu. If you’re bound for Boracay Island, it would be cheaper to get a US to Cebu flight, since Boracay Island is much nearer to Cebu than Manila. It follows that plane fares from Cebu to Boracay will be lower over airfares from Manila to Boracay.

You can get travel information from travel agencies on cost saving tips for travel fares. Asking direct from these agencies can save you time spent on researching different airline websites. Nevertheless, once you get the information you need, booking your summer vacation yourself directly with the airlines can cut down your airfare costs.

Booking your Summer Vacation Yourself: What are your Options for Travel Accommodation in Hostels or Inns

Book early, to make sure you’ll have a place to stay once you get to your destination. Hostels or Inns are much cheaper over hotels. If you’re staying in the city, make sure you’re staying in hostels or inns near the city’s main hub. This way you can have access to commercial areas like malls and restaurants by just walking. You can maximize your stay as well as your money especially if your destination country has poor traffic systems. You may end up spending most of your time sweating it out in heavily congested traffic areas particularly if you’re taking a taxi. This will be to your taxi driver’s advantage because it means you’ll be paying more while riding his cab for longer hours.

Check your destination country if they have YMCA facilities. If you’re not familiar with what a YMCA is, the acronym stands for Young Men’s Christian Association. It’s an organization founded by missionaries which evolved through the

Knowing the tricks on how to save money on summer vacation homes can make your summer vacation a lot more relaxing, spacious and comfortable. As opposed to being in a stank, musty and bug-infested motel, a small B+B with their time constraints, staying in someone’s home or cottage, on a lake, river or ocean front property can be a lot cheaper, a lot roomier and a lot more comfortable. The first and most obvious tip on how to save money on summer vacation homes is to book early, and to ensure the owners that you will take care of their home and property as if it were your own.

One thing that people who rent out their homes in the summer to vacationers worry about the most is the damages that can occur, and the costs of fixing up the damages caused by uncaring tenants. Offer the home owner a written guarantee that you will pay to fix any damages that may incur, for a slightly reduced price on the rental fee. Many homeowners will take advantage of this, as the note can be held as evidence in a civil lawsuit over damages.

In order to save the most, take advantage of the slower seasons for people who rent their homes and cottages to vacationers, try taking your vacation in mid-Spring or early-Fall. The months of July and August are the premium months for people looking to make some extra money buy renting out their waterfront homes and properties, and there is not much that you can offer to make them come down in price. That is, of course, unless there is a reason for people not renting in that area, like there being no fish, or the lake drying up and there being not enough water to drive boats.

You can save on vacation homes by renting the more out of the way properties that are listed. Take a tour on the Internet, and look for summer vacation home rentals that are a ways off of the beaten path. Not everyone likes to vacation out in the middle of nowhere, and many vacation home owners have trouble finding people to rent their properties. Being flexible in where you go, with the mindset that as long as you are out of the city, and into the wilderness, you are on vacation. Just make sure in advance that campfires are allowed, as many homeowners do not have campfire pits on their properties. And, if you were to dig a fire pit, you could be charged with the fee for covering it over and re-landscaping the spot.

One sure-fire way to save money on summer vacation homes is to reserve early, as in six or more months in advance. Many people will offer a reduced rate for advanced bookings, and doing so can save you a good deal of money. Another way is to scour the Internet, as well as local posting boards for the small towns that you would be interested in vacationing in or near. People who do not make a lot of money off of their rental properties will only list on-line, since newspaper advertisements can get very costly if you have to advertise in lots of big-city newspapers. Finding these people, you should be able to barter for a lower cost, as long as you are willing to put a sizeable deposit down.

Saving on vacation homes gives you more money to spend on enjoying yourselves, and getting more from the homeowner can save you even more. Ask the homeowner if they have a fishing boat, or a boat of any kind, water craft or ATVs, basically any recreational vehicles that you can use, and would save money on renting them at a marina or local rental business. The more things that you can get added to what you will be able to use at the summer vacation property would give you more fun things to do, and save you money at the same time.

Being flexible in the time that you will rent the property, and where you would go can be the biggest ways to save money on vacation homes. Be smart and investigate all of the options open to you before committing to one property.

Article by Adam Singleton

We spend all year anticipating the coming of the summer months, when the sun bestows all its glory and we finally get to take that much-needed vacation. But for many of us, the season arrives sooner than we expect: suddenly, summer is only a month or two away, and you realize you’ve made no travel plans whatsoever. So, should you assume you’ve missed out on all the best deals? The answer is simple: absolutely not. While it’s true that summertime travel and accommodation prices climb as the summer months approach, there are always great deals to be found. However, instead of conducting a straightforward search on travel and accommodation sites – where you’d most likely be faced with the pricier offers – your search should target special deals. Many transport and hotel accommodation sites will usually link to a special offers page, where you’ll have access to the best deals available. However, keep in mind that special deals are usually pre-selected by travel companies – so you may not necessarily find a deal to the destination of your choice. But keep an open mind, and you may just end up finding a deal to an unexpected yet perfect destination! However, if you’ve really left your summer vacation planning to the last minute, you might be better off targeting last-minute deals rather than just special deals. Last minute deals can be even more valuable in terms of price and what they offer; and because you can usually get last-minute package holidays, you may have the opportunity to arrange more of your trip for less. However, last-minute deals usually afford even less flexibility in terms of destination than special deals. Moreover, times and dates of travel can be restricted – so you’ll need to be flexible in terms of when you can travel. However, if you conduct your search for cheap summer travel and hotel accommodation deals, yet can’t seem to find any for the destination of your choice, don’t worry – there are other ways to ensure you take the holiday of your dreams without breaking the bank. You may, for instance, end up paying more for airfare; but why not compensate for the cost of travel by choosing to eat at smaller, local haunts during your trip? You’ll save money and get an authentic taste from your holiday destination. Or, choose to map out your own sightseeing tour rather than joining a costly tour group – you never know what you’ll discover while exploring your holiday destination at your own pace! At any rate, the sooner you arrange your summer vacation the better – so finalize those plans before the best deals disappear!

The long summer break is looming – with at least six weeks freedom from school for the kids, but a headache for parents ahead. However, there are ways to make it less of a strain on your pocket whether you’re home or away.

For instance, think about how to save money when you’re on holiday. You’ve booked the flights and the accommodation. You’ve even bought the new swimsuit and the sunscreen. But have you taken out holiday insurance? As more people these days make their own travel arrangements these days rather than buying a packaged holiday, it’s all too easy to forget to buy cover.

Travel insurance isn’t expensive and it’s a false economy to attempt to do without it. The best policies will cover you for independent holidays either as standard or as an option. Ideally, you should buy travel insurance as soon as you pay for your break – but better late than never. If you’re planning several trips this year, consider annual cover: it may end up cheaper than buying single trip policies.

With your trip looming, you now need to sort out your holiday cash. Depending on when you’re going, you may have time to get a new credit card. If you’re just going to use it for emergencies or if you’re always going to pay the balance off in full, you want a card which gives you rewards each time you spend on it.

Do watch out when you’re paying for goods or services abroad with a card. You might be offered the opportunity to pay in sterling rather than local currency: this is a bad idea (it’s technically known as dynamic currency conversion) because the exchange rate will be worse than what is applied by your card operator.

Wherever you’re going, you’ll need local currency, if only to pay for a cab from the airport. Monitor rates before you buy and don’t wait until you’re at your departure airport. When you draw money abroad from an ATM, keep your wits about you: don’t take out far more than you need because you’re flummoxed by the exchange rates. Carry a card so you know, for example, that 50 Euros is the equivalent of roughly £44.

Take care when you’re abroad, and don’t let crime ruin your holiday. Lock your passport in a hotel safe, if possible, and never leave your belongings out of your sight. Keep a separate list of emergency numbers – such as for your credit card and your premium travel insurance details – and leave it in your room. And make sure your home is safe when you’re away: if you have an alarm then set it. Lock up properly: if you’re burgled and you haven’t done so your insurer may not pay up. Ask a neighbour to keep an eye on your home and make sure there are no obvious signs you’re away – such as your post sticking out of the letterbox.

However, even if you’re staying at home, this can be just as expensive as being abroad. If you’re out and about with the kids, then save money by booking travel tickets in advance and search the internet for deals on attractions. Take packed lunches and give the children a small amount of spending money rather than giving in to pester power in the gift shop. And find out if your local council has free – or cheap – activities for children.

It is protecting themselves, their family, and their vacation investment that a number of travelers are concerning themselves with now that the summer travel season is commencing. What you should get is travel insurance if you are planning a trip that involves a sizable financial outlay.

What can be covered in this case are missed flights, bungled connections, and illness. What you have here is a safeguard for financial loss of there are any trip cancellations, delays, or interruptions.

You can expect variations when it comes to travel policies but these include accident, sickness, baggage loss and flight insurance, and financial protection in the event of trip interruption and delay.

It is medical evacuation that is a feature rarely offered by conventional health insurance plans which is included when it comes to the best policies. For the cost, this is because one or more airplanes or helicopters are used to retrieve the sick traveler.

It is trip cancellation that is the most likely occurrence because of illness, accident, or weather. There are times when a traveler must cut short a trip to go home and this is where trip interruption becomes another possible scenario.

Reaching a price of about 5 to 7 percent of the trip cost per person is the cost of travel insurance. If there is a ,000 per person trip, it can include an additional 0 or 0.

Considering that you may be shopping for travel insurance policies, see to it that you look for one with a 24 hour hot line providing international access as this is essential for medical emergencies. What you should check before traveling abroad is the US State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs, Superintendent of Documents, US Government Printing Office, Washington, DC.

In this case, you can gain information on crime, medical care, drug supplies, and on areas prone to natural disasters and political instability from them.

With regard to experiencing robberies abroad, most US Embassies and Consulates maintain 24 hour operators or answering services to assist Americans in difficulty. Including dealing with local police, expediting the replacement of a stolen passport, canceling stolen credit cards, and assisting with language problems, they can help you with these.

They can direct travelers to the right source for replacing airline tickets provide a list of English speaking lawyers and instruct travelers on getting money transferred.

You can receive temporary identification from them if you lose your passport. Normally, a passport could be replaced within 24 hours but this has since changed due to security reasons. While abroad, Americans can lose their passports and if they do, new passports with computer generated digital photographs will be issued to them.

In this case, travelers should consider packing a notarized copy of a birth certificate, a copy of the information pages of the passport, and two passport size photos separately from the passport. You can expect this to speed things up if the actual passport is stolen.

Travelers are recommended by the State Department to pack photocopies of credit cards, airline tickets, and drivers’ licenses and leave a second set of photocopies behind with a friend or family member as well.

Keep a copy of the police report, which is necessary for making any insurance claims upon returning home. It will be wise for a traveler exposed to political instability abroad to contact the nearest US Embassy or Consulate for advice.

You can obtain tips and advice on street safety, driving, and terrorism when it comes to foreign travel from the State Department’s publication. It will be possible for the State Department to give you a copy or you can read about it at the State Department’s Web site.

Preparing for your summer vacation is something you shouldn’t treat as a hard task. Actually, you’re supposed to enjoy the planning part of your vacation since it will get you excited about the actual vacation itself. What you need to do is to get every person coming along for the vacation to get involved with the planning stage. This way the majority of those coming along will agree to the location and all other things related to your vacation.

Anyone who foresees difficulties on what the majority has decided and planned on will be entitled to change his vacation plans for the summer. This will ensure that no one will have a hard time in case any hitches in the plans will arise. Preparing for your summer vacation then will no longer make you feel burdened about being solely responsible for your traveling companions’ enjoyment.

When preparing for your summer vacation here are a few pointers on what you should take into consideration:

Destination – this is the first thing that you should all agree upon when preparing for your summer vacation. When choosing a vacation destination, make sure that the place will provide each person a lot of activities so as to not have someone complaining about being bored while everyone else is having fun. Make sure that you hear out everybody’s suggestions and their opinions. When brainstorming and preparing for your summer vacation location, try to keep the destination within range of where everyone is living.

Budget – when preparing for your summer vacation keep in mind every participant’s budget range to make it convenient for everybody joining the vacation. Once the budget amount has been settled and agreed upon, everyone can easily set their goals on how much money they have to save for the trip. Taking tours by traveling in great numbers have price discount advantages. This is crucial when preparing for your summer vacation because it lets those coming along make use of their money wisely as their way of preparing for the summer vacation.

Schedule – preparing for your summer vacation should be done weeks before the actual vacation. Everyone involved can organize or adjust their schedules beforehand. Just make sure that each person agrees unanimously on the date and duration of the trip. There should be no differing ideas whether the vacation is too long or too short, since all those who will agree to come along should have a sense of satisfaction that the vacation will be worth their time and money.

Activities – since you are preparing for your summer vacation, you can ask the others involved in your vacation if you are to take a traditional summer vacation of going to the beach or to some place cooler like a ski resort. Who knows, you might even get some new ideas in preparing for your next summer vacation.

Weather – the most common mistake when preparing for your summer vacation is overlooking the current and future weather of your vacation destination. It is very disappointing once you get to your vacation spot if the place is being battered by a heavy storm or that natural calamity has recently struck. Preparing for your summer vacation includes doing some research as your homework and checkin out everything beforehand so your trip will not be wasted.

Following these simple guidelines will help a lot in preparing for your summer vacation. As the organizer, it would be your task to consider everyone’s opinions and suggestions and check them out if they present better options. This way one and all are sure to enjoy the summer vacation.

With the commencement of the summer travel season, a lot of travelers are thinking about protecting themselves, their family, and their vacation investment. Do consider travel insurance if you are in the middle of planning a trip that involves a sizable financial outlay. What can be covered in this case are missed flights, bungled connections, and illness. You can consider this as a safeguard for financial loss which can be used should there be cancelled trips, delays, or interruptions.

What most travel policies include are sickness, baggage loss and flight insurance, accident, and financial protection in the event of trip interruption and delay even if these vary. The best policies also come with medical evacuation, a feature rarely offered by conventional health insurance plans. What justifies the cost is the usage of one or more airplanes or helicopters to retrieve the sick traveler.

In this case, trip cancellation is the most likely occurrence and usually because of illness, accident, or weather. Trip interruption also is a possible scenario, usually because a traveler must cut short a trip to go home. The cost of travel insurance varies but figure around 5 to 7 percent of the trip cost per person. When it comes to a ,000 per person trip, an additional 0 or 0 may be included.

It is important that you consider one with a 24 hour hot line providing international access as this is essential for medical emergencies when shopping for travel insurance policies. Be sure to check the US State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs, Superintendent of Documents, US Government Printing Office, Washington, DC before traveling abroad. In this case, you can gain information on crime, medical care, drug supplies, and on areas prone to natural disasters and political instability from them.

When it comes to robberies abroad, most US Embassies and Consulates maintain 24 hour operators or answering services to assist Americans in difficulty. They could be of great help when it comes to dealing with local police, expediting the replacement of a stolen passport, canceling stolen credit cards, and assisting with language problems. They are also capable of working to direct travelers to the right source for replacing airline tickets, provide a list of English speaking lawyers, and instruct travelers on getting money transferred.

For lost passports, they often can provide temporary identification. Because of security reasons, the situation changed but passports normally could be replaced within 24 hours. When Americans lose their passports, new passports with computer generated digital photographs will be issued to them.

In this case, travelers should consider packing a notarized copy of a birth certificate, a copy of the information pages of the passport, and two passport size photos separately from the passport. You can expect a speedy process in this case if the actual passport is stolen. In this case, the State Department advises travelers to also bring along photocopies of credit cards, airline tickets, and drivers’ licenses and leave a second set of photocopies behind with a friend or family member.

If you need to file claims when you get home, you should have a copy of the police report. It will be wise for a traveler exposed to political instability abroad to contact the nearest US Embassy or Consulate for advice. Tips and advice on foreign travel when it comes to street safety, driving, and terrorism are available from the State Department’s publication. The State Department can provide you with a copy or you can read about it at the State Department’s Web site.
